An angular contact ball bearing carries a combined radial and axial load, with the contact angle deciding how that split falls: a steeper angle takes more thrust and runs slower, a shallower angle the reverse. A single row takes thrust in one direction only, so a second bearing facing the other way carries thrust the other direction. The 28 mm width in a 110 mm bore puts this in the light 70-series section rather than the heavier 72 or 73 sections.

The bearing mounts with an interference fit on the ring that rotates, seated square against a shoulder. Because a single row locates axially in one direction, the direction the bearing faces on assembly sets which way thrust is carried.
