A FAG B-series super-precision spindle bearing in the 7022 envelope — 110 mm bore, 170 mm outside diameter, 28 mm width. Open type, 25° contact angle, phenolic cage, universally matched so it can be stacked with identical bearings at a defined medium preload.
The B prefix matters: FAG’s B7 range is the dedicated high-speed spindle-bearing line, with a smaller ball complement and different internal geometry than a general-purpose 7022, optimised for speed and running accuracy rather than raw capacity.
B — FAG high-speed spindle bearing series.
7022 — ISO 70 dimension series, bore code 22, giving a 110 mm bore and the 110 x 170 x 28 mm envelope. Agrees with the recorded dimensions.
E — in FAG’s spindle-bearing scheme, a 25° contact angle. (FAG reads C as 15°. Note that other makers use these letters differently — NSK reads A5 as 25° and A as 30°.)
TPA — a fabric-reinforced phenolic cage.
P4 — ISO precision class 4, equivalent to ABEC 7.
UM — universal matching at medium preload. Universal means any two bearings of this designation clamp together to give the correct preload, in back-to-back, face-to-face or tandem arrangement.
The original description said the bearing was “constructed from high-quality phenolic material”. Only the cage is phenolic — the rings and balls are bearing steel, as they must be. We have corrected that, because a reader could reasonably have taken it to mean a plastic-raceway bearing, which this is not.
A 25° contact angle carries substantially more thrust per unit of radial load than a 15° bearing and holds axial position better under interrupted cutting, at the cost of a lower speed ceiling and more heat at a given rpm. It is the usual specification for milling and boring spindles; 15° is the usual specification for grinding. Swapping one for the other changes the stiffness and thermal behaviour of the whole spindle, so check the machine builder’s figure before substituting.
The phenolic cage is a genuine spec that most listings omit. Phenolic is self-lubricating, absorbs oil and is far kinder to the balls than pressed steel during momentary oil starvation, which is why it is standard on high-speed spindle bearings. It also caps the operating temperature — phenolic cages are not for hot service.
Medium preload sits between light (fastest, least stiff) and heavy (stiffest, hottest), and is the common default for general machine-tool spindle work.
Basic dynamic and static load ratings and limiting speeds are deliberately blank. Schaeffler’s own catalogue pages do not render to direct retrieval, and we will not substitute figures from a distributor mirror or from the neighbouring B7022C (15°), which is a different bearing with different ratings. Contact FAG/Schaeffler or an authorised distributor with the full designation if a certified rating is required.
One bearing. Universal matching means it is designed to be used with others of the same designation — a UM bearing on its own still functions, but the preload only exists once two or more are clamped together. If you need a matched set, tell us how many and we will confirm what we can supply.
Observe the thrust-direction marking on the outer ring; an angular contact bearing fitted backwards loads the unsupported shoulder and fails quickly. Universally matched faces must never be shimmed, lapped or reground — the preload is ground into them. Press only on the ring being fitted, never through the balls, and confirm shaft and housing are machined to a tolerance consistent with P4 or the accuracy is wasted.
ISO base number 7022. Be careful substituting a general-purpose 7022 for a B7022 — the B-series internal geometry differs, so speed capability and stiffness will not match even at the same nominal angle and class. Contact-angle letters vary by maker: FAG C = 15° and E = 25°; NSK C = 15°, A5 = 25°, A = 30°; SKF AC = 25°. We hold two other 7022-envelope bearings, an NSK 7022C at 15° and a Fafnir 3MM9122 at 25° — ask if you need a particular combination.
