Decoding the designation

The 7217 base number places the bearing in the ISO 72 dimension series with an 85 mm bore. The DU suffix is MRC’s duplex universal grinding: the faces are ground so that any two pieces of the same designation mount together back-to-back, face-to-face or in tandem without a spacer or a factory-matched pair.

Contact angle

MRC grinds its 7000-series angular contact bearings to a 29° contact angle. That is specific to the MRC scheme and sits between the 25° and 40° angles used elsewhere, so the thrust capacity and speed behaviour of this bearing do not match a 72-series number from another maker.

What these specs mean in practice

Contact angle sets the split between radial and axial capability. At 29° the bearing takes substantially more thrust in its loaded direction than a 15° bearing of the same envelope, at the cost of some speed capability, while radial capacity is broadly similar. A single row takes thrust in one direction only, so axial location in both directions requires a second bearing opposed to it.
