Decoding the designation

NU is the non-locating cylindrical roller design: the inner ring is a plain cylinder with no ribs and the guide ribs sit on the outer ring. The 3 marks the 23 dimension series and 24 gives the 120 mm bore. E is the reinforced FAG internal design, with a larger roller complement and a higher dynamic rating than the base design. P5 is ISO class 5 running accuracy for radial and axial runout. No clearance suffix follows, so internal clearance is CN.

What these specs mean in practice

An NU bearing carries radial load only and allows the shaft to move axially relative to the housing, which makes it the floating position in a two-bearing arrangement where thermal growth has to go somewhere. Line contact between roller and raceway gives a far higher radial rating than a ball bearing of the same envelope. P5 accuracy tightens runout for gearbox and spindle-quality shaft positioning.
