Solid machined brass cage suits continuous service to approximately 200 °C. Requires a housing lubrication port aligned with the outer-ring groove to make use of the W33 feature. |

A double-row spherical roller bearing, 45 mm bore x 85 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide, in the ISO 222 dimension series. Two rows of barrel rollers run on a single spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set can swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That is what makes the bearing self-aligning: it tolerates shaft deflection and housing misalignment that would wreck a cylindrical roller or deep groove ball bearing of the same size, while carrying very heavy radial load and useful thrust in both directions.
222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, dimension series 22.
09 — bore code for a 45 mm bore.
EA — Schaeffler’s increased-capacity internal design, inner ring carrying lateral retaining ribs. The current Schaeffler code for this design family is E1A.
S — annular lubrication groove around the outer ring plus lubrication holes through it. This is FAG’s own code for the feature the rest of the industry writes as W33, which is why both forms appear on this listing.
M — solid machined brass cage, guided on the rollers.
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than Normal.
The bore is straight and cylindrical. There is no K in the designation, so this bearing presses straight onto the shaft seat and needs no adapter sleeve — a real difference from the 22209K tapered-bore variants, which cannot be mounted on a plain shaft at all without an H309 sleeve.
The brass cage is the reason to pick this variant. A solid machined brass cage runs continuously to around 200 °C, absorbs the shock and vibration that work-hardens and cracks a pressed steel cage, and survives marginal or intermittent lubrication far better than a moulded polymer cage. It is the normal specification for crushers, vibrating screens, large fans, gearboxes, kiln drives and paper machinery.
C3 clearance is deliberately looser than Normal when cold, so that working clearance still remains once the inner ring has grown from a tight shaft fit and from operating heat. Fit C3 where shaft interference is heavy or the bearing runs hot. Substituting Normal clearance into a C3 application lets the bearing preload itself and overheat; conversely, fitting C3 where the machine relies on tight clearance for shaft location gives up running accuracy and adds noise. Clearance is not a quality grade, it is a fit decision, and it has to match the application in both directions.
The outer-ring groove and holes let grease or oil be fed straight into the roller rows through the housing instead of relying on lubricant migrating in from the ends. Relubrication is the single largest factor in spherical roller bearing life, so this feature matters on anything that gets greased in service. It does require a housing with a matching lubrication port lined up on the groove.
Schaeffler publishes the following for the current-production 22209-E1-XL that occupies this envelope and internal design family:
Basic dynamic load rating C: 104 kN
Basic static load rating C0: 99 kN
Fatigue limit load Cu: 12.7 kN
Limiting speed: 10 100 rpm
Reference speed: 5 600 rpm
Mass: approximately 0.59 kg
Sold as 1 Pc. One complete bearing: inner ring with both roller rows and the brass cage, plus the outer ring. Spherical roller bearings ship as a non-separable assembly, so there is no cup, cone or separate ring to buy alongside it. Because the bore is straight, no sleeve, locknut or lockwasher is needed or included.
Mount on the inner ring, never through the rollers. Heat the bearing in an induction heater or oil bath to about 80 – 100 °C above the shaft rather than driving it on cold; a spherical roller bearing of this size takes a genuine interference fit. Support the outer ring squarely in its housing seat and check that the outer ring is free to take up its own alignment before you pull everything down — forcing the self-aligning feature out of neutral during assembly defeats the whole point of the bearing. Line the housing lubrication port up with the outer-ring groove, and purge the groove with grease before running.
The straight-bore, W33-equivalent, brass-cage 22209 is a widely cross-referenced part. Dimensionally equivalent straight-bore bearings include SKF 22209 E, NSK 22209EAE4, NTN 22209EAW33 and 22209EMW33, NTN-SNR 22209EAW33, Timken 22209EJW33, RHP 22209HLW33 and Nachi 22209EXW33. Two cautions when substituting. First, cage material moves both the rating and the temperature ceiling on some brands, so a pressed-steel-cage equivalent is not automatically a like-for-like swap into a high-shock or high-temperature duty. Second, on SKF and Schaeffler the modern E and E1 designs include the lubrication groove and holes as standard with no suffix at all, whereas SKF W on its own means the groove and holes are absent — read those two the right way round. Any 22209K is a tapered-bore bearing: same envelope, different mounting, and it is a related size rather than a drop-in for this part.
