Open means no seal and no shield on either side and no grease charge — the rings carry SKF’s preservative oil only, so the lubricant is your choice. This is the bulk lot: ten pieces from one production batch, priced below the per-piece rate of the four-piece lot, aimed at anyone building or maintaining more than a couple of machines at a time.

The original listing carried no manufacturer field, no barcode and a one-line spec stub, and its title said only “10 Pcs” against an internal stock count of 13 — a combination that could reasonably be read as either ten bearings or thirteen. We photographed the stock, counted the sachets, and have rewritten the listing so the sale unit is unambiguous: one purchase of this listing is ten bearings. The barcode 7316577121882 and the Japanese country of origin were both read off the sachet print and added to the record.
Extra-thin-section bearings have a square cross-section: the radial wall, (outside diameter − bore) ÷ 2, equals the width. Here (22 − 10) ÷ 2 = 6 mm, which is exactly the stated 6 mm width. The dimensions on this listing are internally consistent and match SKF’s published data, so there is no size ambiguity to resolve.
A thin section trades capacity for space. At 2.7 kN dynamic and 1.27 kN static, the 61900 is a locating and guiding bearing for light, fast, precise rotation, not a load-carrying member. The thin raceway walls also make it more sensitive to mounting than a standard-section bearing: an out-of-round housing bore, an oversized shaft, or too much interference distorts the rings, and that distortion shows up in your machine as runout and noise. The seat tolerances matter more here than the bearing does.
Choosing open over shielded or sealed is a real engineering decision. Open gives the lowest friction torque available — no rubbing lip, no grease churn — which is what an encoder shaft, a low-drag idler or an oil-mist-lubricated spindle needs. The cost is that the bearing has no protection and holds no lubricant of its own. In a dusty or wet location an open bearing will not last; specify 61900-2Z (shields) or 61900-2RS1 (contact seals) for that duty. Those are different parts, not equivalents, and swapping them in changes both the friction and the permissible speed.
Normal CN clearance suits ordinary fits and modest temperature differences between the rings. Mismatched clearance fails in both directions, which is why it is worth thinking about rather than defaulting. Too little residual clearance once the interference fit and thermal growth are accounted for, and the balls run preloaded: friction rises, the bearing heats, the clearance closes further, and life collapses in a self-reinforcing loop. Too much clearance, and the radial load is carried by fewer balls, so contact stress rises, the bearing runs noisily, and the balls can skid rather than roll, scuffing the raceways. A thin section gives you a narrower window than a 6000 or 6200, so use the abutment figures below rather than guessing.

A deliberate caveat on those two speed figures: they are SKF’s published values for the shielded 61900-2Z, because SKF’s datasheet for the open bearing does not publish them separately in the source we used. An open bearing has less drag than a shielded one, so its permissible speed is at least these numbers — read 36 000 r/min as a conservative floor, not a ceiling. Every other figure in the list is envelope data that closure does not change.

Apply mounting force only to the ring being fitted — inner ring for a shaft fit, outer ring for a housing fit — and never through the balls. At a 10 mm bore, use a proper mounting sleeve or a small arbor press; these rings are thin enough that one careless hammer blow permanently distorts them and the bearing never runs true again. Because they ship with preservative oil only, lubricate before running: light oil, oil mist, or a small charge of a suitable grease according to speed and duty. Do not wash the preservative off and then run dry. Leave each sachet sealed until the moment of fitting so the remaining pieces stay protected.
The 10 × 22 × 6 mm open envelope is standardised in ISO 15, so it interchanges dimensionally across every major maker. Open bearings carry no closure suffix, so cross-referencing is just a matter of each brand’s series convention: SKF 61900, FAG 61900, INA 61900, NSK 6900, NTN 6900, Koyo 6900, NACHI 6900, EZO 6900, and the trade descriptions 6900 open and 10x22x6. The trap is closure rather than size: 6900ZZ, 6900-2RS, 61900-2Z and 61900-2RS1 all share this envelope but are shielded or sealed, and they are not the same part as an open bearing.
