A Timken single cone for imperial tapered roller service, cone identity 580W. The cone is the inner half of a tapered roller bearing: a case-hardened alloy steel inner ring carrying its tapered rollers in a stamped steel cage. Bore is 3.2500 in and cone width is 1.4212 in.
580 is the cone identity. The W denotes a keyway machined in the cone, so the cone is keyed to the shaft rather than relying on the press fit alone to carry torque. The trailing -3, also written *3 or #3, is Timken’s precision Class 3 tolerance grade.
The keyway makes this a driven cone: it suits positions where the inner ring must transmit rotation, such as spindle drive noses and geared shaft ends, and it means the shaft itself has to carry the matching key seat. Class 3 tightens bore, outside diameter and runout tolerances over standard stock, which improves mounted running accuracy. Case-hardened alloy steel gives a hard raceway over a tough core for shock-loaded duty.

The cone seats on the shaft with an interference fit and is driven home against the shaft shoulder on the cone backface. The negative effective centre location of -0.21 in places the bearing’s effective load centre inboard of the cone backface, which is the figure used when setting bearing spread on a two-row mounting. Setting is taken up after the cup is seated in the housing bore, to the specified bench end play or preload.
The 580 cone number is carried across the tapered roller industry as a common interchange identity at the same envelope. A plain 580 without the W is the same envelope without a keyway and is a related part rather than a substitution where the key drive is required, and a 580 without the -3 suffix is the standard tolerance grade.
