What this part is — and what is not in the box:
This is a Timken tapered roller bearing cone only: the inner ring complete with its tapered rollers and cage. It is not a complete bearing. The outer ring — the cup — is a separate part number and is not included. We are leading with this because a cone bought in the belief it is a complete bearing is a wasted purchase and a return, and the way tapered roller bearings are numbered makes the mistake easy.
The cone is the half that goes on the shaft. If your existing cup is unworn, undamaged and correctly seated, replacing the cone alone is legitimate and normal practice. If the cup shows spalling, a wear step or brinell marks, replace both — a new cone rolling on a damaged raceway will fail quickly no matter how good the cone is.
47896 — the cone number in Timken’s inch series.W — a Timken component design designation carried on this cone. We are not going to invent a decode for it: Timken does not publish a public suffix table covering W on cones, and guessing at a letter that could describe rib geometry or a cage variant would be worse than leaving it. It is reproduced exactly as marked so you can match it against your parts list.-3 — precision Class 3. Confirmed by the condition note on this unit, which records Class 3 precision independently of the part number.
Class 3 precision — why the suffix is the reason to buy this one:
Standard industrial tapered roller bearings are Class 0. Class 3 is a tighter tolerance grade, controlling bore, outside diameter and running accuracy more closely than the standard grade. It is specified where shaft position and runout matter: machine-tool spindles, precision gear trains, printing and converting rolls, anything where bearing-induced runout shows up in the product.
The practical consequence is that a Class 3 cone and a Class 0 cone of the same number are not casually interchangeable in both directions. Fitting Class 0 where the drawing calls for Class 3 loses the running accuracy the designer paid for. Fitting Class 3 where Class 0 was specified is harmless in accuracy terms but you have bought precision you do not need. If your machine’s drawing carries a precision callout, honour it — and if it does not, that is itself a hint that Class 0 was the original build.

The load ratings above are properties of the complete 47896/47820 bearing, not of the cone in isolation — a cone has no load rating without a raceway to run on. They are given so you can size the assembly you are rebuilding.
197 kN dynamic and 307 kN static in a 5.75 in outside diameter is a substantial bearing. Note again how far the static rating exceeds the dynamic one — the ratio is a signal that this envelope tolerates standing and shock load well, which is characteristic of larger tapered roller bearings with many rollers in contact. Where a bearing spends most of its life stationary or slowly oscillating under load, C0 is the number that governs, because the failure mode is permanent indentation of the raceway rather than rolling-contact fatigue.
This cone also appears in Timken’s 2TS-IM matched-assembly listings, indirect-mount, under X1S-47896/Y1S-47820 and X2S-47896/Y3S-47820. Those are two-row factory-matched sets. If your machine uses a matched assembly, a single loose cone is a component of it, not a substitute for it — matched sets are ground together to a specified combined setting.
Two cones in stock, sold individually. Two is the useful number here: an opposed pair on one shaft uses two cones, so this is enough to re-cone a complete shaft assembly provided both cups are serviceable. Neither cup is included.
Cones normally take an interference fit on the shaft. Press only on the ring face — never through the rollers, and never use the cage as a driving surface. Endplay or preload on a tapered roller assembly is set by the shoulder-to-shoulder distance in the housing at assembly, so replacing a cone changes the setting and it must be re-established, not assumed. On a Class 3 build, also check that the shaft seat itself still meets the tolerance the precision grade was specified for; a worn shaft seat throws away the accuracy of the bearing.
