This is an imperial single-row tapered roller bearing cone — the inner ring with its tapered rollers and cage. It is one half of a tapered roller bearing. The mating cup (outer race) is a separate part number and is not included in this listing. There is no snap ring and none is used on this design.
368A is a Timken imperial cone in the 362/368 family; its matching cup is 362A (362 is also listed), so a complete single-row bearing is a 368A cone plus a 362A cup. The trailing -3 (also written *3 or #3) is Timken’s precision Class 3. Timken tapered roller classes run Class 4 (standard commercial), then Class 3, Class 0 and Class 00 in increasing precision, so this cone is held to tighter bore and running-accuracy tolerances than the standard part.
Earlier copy on this listing quoted a dynamic rating of 59.4 kN, a static rating of 77.2 kN, a 120°C maximum temperature and a 6,000 rpm limiting speed. None of those figures belongs to this bearing: the published ratings for the 368A/362A assembly are 102,000 N dynamic (C1) and 95,800 N static (C0), and no temperature or limiting-speed value is published for a standalone cone, because both depend on the lubricant, the cup, the housing and the setting rather than the ring itself. Use the published figures below.
Cone bore (d): 2.0000 in / 50.8 mm
Inner ring width (B): 0.8750 in / 22.225 mm
Mating cup 362A outside diameter (D): 3.5000 in / 88.900 mm
Mating cup 362A width (C): 0.6501 in / 16.513 mm
Cone weight: 2.6 lb / 1.181 kg
The ratings below are catalogue values for the complete 368A/362A single-row assembly, not for the cone alone.
Dynamic radial rating C1 (1 million rev basis): 22,900 lbf / 102,000 N
Dynamic radial rating C90 (90 million rev basis): 5,930 lbf / 26,400 N
Dynamic axial rating Ca90: 3,250 lbf / 14,400 N
Static radial rating C0: 21,500 lbf / 95,800 N
K factor: 1.83 · e: 0.32 · Y: 1.88 · geometry factor Cg: 0.0773
Effective load centre: −0.17 in / −4.3 mm (inside the cone backface)
Maximum shaft fillet radius cleared: 0.14 in / 3.600 mm
Shaft backing shoulder diameter, frontface (da): 2.2 in / 56 mm
Shaft backing shoulder diameter, backface (db): 2.44 in / 62 mm
A K factor of 1.83 makes this a radially biased taper with useful but secondary thrust capacity, and the slim 0.6501 in cup keeps the axial envelope short — a 2 in shaft carried in a 3.5 in housing bore without a long boss. That is why the family is common in gear reducers and shaft-mounted drives. Class 3 precision earns its keep where the cone must hold a gear in mesh without wander, or where a pair is being set to preload rather than end play: tighter tolerances make the set repeatable. The pressed steel cage and the 0.14 in permissible shaft fillet make it straightforward to fit on general machinery shafting. Lubricate with oil or grease to suit the housing.
This listing ships 1 Pc — one 368A-3 cone. No cup, no spacer, no seal, no snap ring. A normal two-bearing shaft needs two cones and two cups.
Press the cone on square with the driver on the backface only, never through the rollers or cage. Keep the shaft shoulder within the da/db range so the ring is supported and the cage runs clear. Because a tapered roller bearing has no internal clearance until it is mounted, the end play or preload is set after both cups are fully home — and a Class 3 cone only pays for itself if that setting is done properly.
368A is dimensionally standardised, so 368A cones from Timken, Koyo, NTN, Bower/BCA and Federal-Mogul interchange with one another and with any maker’s 362A cup. Plain 368 is a genuine interchange, not merely a related size: it shares the same bore, width, ratings, K factor and cup family. What is not interchangeable is the tolerance grade — a standard-precision 368A shares this envelope but not Class 3 — and 362 versus 362A, which differ in cup detail, so order the cup by number against your housing.
