A Timken 98316 tapered roller bearing cone: the inner ring, its tapered raceway, the roller complement and the cage, supplied as a single assembled component. The 98316 belongs to the imperial 98000 series and is made in case-carburized bearing steel with a stamped steel cage. Bore is 3.1495 in (79.997 mm) and cone width is 1.9375 in.
Timken numbers a tapered roller bearing as two separate part numbers, one for the cone and one for the cup, and the cone number identifies the bore and the roller path. 98316 is the cone number. The matching cup is the Timken 98788, and the two together form the 98316/98788 assembly. A trailing –3, *3 or #3 on a Timken tapered part marks Class 3 precision; this part carries no such suffix and is a Class 2 cone.
A tapered roller bearing carries combined radial and thrust load in one direction, with the thrust capacity set by the raceway angle. Case-carburized steel gives a hard running surface over a tough core, which is why Timken uses it on shock-loaded gearbox, axle and mill-stand positions in preference to a through-hardened ring. The stamped steel cage is the standard high-volume design and is retained on the cone, so the roller complement stays with the inner ring when the bearing is separated.
Cone only, comprising the inner ring, rollers and cage. The matching cup is the Timken 98788. Sold as 1 Pc.
The cone is a press fit on the shaft journal and the cup presses into the housing bore separately, so the two halves are installed independently and then set to the required endplay or preload by adjusting the axial position of one race. Cone backface to-clear radius is 0.14 in and the cone frontface backing diameter is 3.82 in, which set the minimum shoulder and fillet dimensions on the shaft. Effective centre location is 0.52 in from the reference face.
Any manufacturer’s 98316 cone made to the same imperial ISO 355 envelope is a direct interchange, and Class 3 versions of the same number will run in a Class 2 position. Adjacent 98000 series numbers such as 98350 and 98400 are related sizes with different bores and are not substitutions.
