Straight cylindrical bore, two rows of barrel-shaped rollers running on a common spherical outer raceway, carried in a pressed brass window cage, open on both faces, greater than normal C3 radial internal clearance.

Decoding the designation

222 is the dimension series and 09 is the bore code, giving 45 mm. CY is SKF’s code for a pressed brass window cage, which distinguishes it from the pressed steel cage of a CC and the machined brass cage of an MB. C3 is the radial internal clearance class.

Bore form

Straight cylindrical bore, so the bearing seats directly on a plain 45 mm shaft journal and is retained by a shaft shoulder, a locknut or an abutment ring.

What these specs mean in practice

The spherical outer raceway lets the roller set swivel inside the outer ring, so shaft deflection and housing misalignment are absorbed without edge loading the rollers. Two rows mean thrust is carried in both directions as well as heavy radial load, which is why the series is standard on conveyor pulleys, fans, crushers and gearbox output shafts. A pressed brass window cage tolerates higher temperature and more aggressive oils than a pressed steel cage and is non-magnetic. C3 clearance keeps a working clearance where the fit is tight or the inner ring runs hot.

Fitting notes

A straight-bore spherical roller is mounted as an interference fit on the shaft, with force applied to the inner ring face, and located in the housing according to whether the position is the locating or the floating bearing. Lubrication is fed through the housing, since the outer ring has no groove or radial holes.

Interchange guidance

The 45 x 85 x 23 mm envelope is the standard 22209 seat, so FAG 22209-E1-C3, NSK 22209EAE4C3, NTN 22209EMD1C3, Timken 22209EJW33C3 and Koyo 22209RHR C3 all fit the same shaft and housing. Within that envelope the cage and the bore form change the part: a 22209 K has a 1:12 tapered bore intended for an H309 adapter sleeve, and a CY, CC or MB execution carries a different cage and therefore a different speed limit, so all are related sizes rather than identical parts.
