| Manufacturer Status | Hoover Ball and Bearing's bearing operation combined with Nippon Seiko as Hoover-NSK Bearings and became NSK Corporation's Ann Arbor plant. Closest current equivalent: NSK 22216EAKE4C3. |
| Compatible With Replaces | Related size, NOT an interchange: the straight-bore 22216, 22216E4 and 22216W33 share the same 80 x 140 x 33 mm envelope but mount directly on an 80 mm shaft. A tapered-bore bearing will not fit a plain shaft and a straight-bore bearing will not fit a sleeve. |
| Additional Attributes | 1:12 tapered bore, non-separable assembly, self-aligning. Bare bearing only — no housing or sleeve supplied. Adapter sleeve H316 takes a 70 mm shaft while withdrawal sleeve AH316 takes a 75 mm seat; the two figures are different and must not be interchanged. Running clearance is set at assembly by the distance drawn up the taper and must be measured during fitting. |
| Item Weight | Approximately 2.01 kg |

A double-row spherical roller bearing, 80 mm bore x 140 mm outside diameter x 33 mm wide, in the ISO 222 dimension series, with a tapered bore. Two rows of barrel rollers share one spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That self-aligning action absorbs shaft deflection and housing misalignment that would destroy a cylindrical roller or deep groove ball bearing of the same size, while carrying very heavy radial load and thrust in both directions. It carries Hoover markings; Hoover’s bearing operation became part of NSK, and the E4 suffix on this part is NSK nomenclature.
222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, dimension series 22.
16 — bore code for an 80 mm bore.
K — tapered bore, taper ratio 1:12. The character that decides how the bearing mounts.
E4 — oil groove plus lubrication holes in the outer ring. This is NSK’s code for the feature the rest of the industry writes as W33, which is why both forms appear on this listing. It is a lubrication feature, not a capacity code.
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than Normal.
What these specs mean in practice — the tapered bore:
A 1:12 tapered bore will not fit a plain shaft. It has to be drawn up a matching taper, which means one of two accessories, neither of which is included with this bearing:
An H316 adapter sleeve, letting the bearing clamp anywhere along a plain 70 mm shaft. That number catches people out, and this is the worst trap in the whole adapter-sleeve range: up to H313 the shaft is the bearing bore minus 5 mm, but from H314 upwards the step becomes 10 mm. So an 80 mm bore bearing sits on a 70 mm shaft, not 75 mm. Order the sleeve against the bearing bore rather than against an assumed shaft size. H-series adapter sleeves are normally supplied complete with their locknut and lockwasher; NSK’s equivalents are the AN16 nut and AW16X washer.
An AH316 withdrawal sleeve is the alternative, and it does not share the quirk — withdrawal sleeves run bore minus 5 mm throughout, so AH316 fits a 75 mm seat. Those two figures are different and must not be cross-populated. Withdrawal sleeves come without a nut, ordered separately.
What the taper buys you is direct control of internal clearance plus the freedom to mount a bearing anywhere along a length of plain round bar with no machined seat. How far you draw the bearing up the sleeve sets how much the inner ring expands and therefore what running clearance you finish with. Measure the clearance reduction as you tighten: over-driving preloads the bearing before it ever turns and is the classic commissioning failure, and under-driving lets the inner ring creep on the sleeve.
C3 clearance starts looser than Normal when cold, which pairs sensibly with a tapered bore because the mounting itself already takes clearance out, and it leaves working clearance once the inner ring has grown under a tight fit and operating heat. The outer-ring groove and holes let grease or oil be fed straight into the roller rows through the housing. On an 80 mm bore bearing the grease volume is large and the relubrication interval short under load, so this feature is a genuine service-life driver — provided the housing has a lubrication port aligned to the groove.
NSK publishes the following for the 22216EAKE4 in this envelope:
Basic dynamic load rating Cr: 264 000 N
Basic static load rating C0r: 275 000 N
Thermal speed rating: 4 000 rpm
Mechanical speed rating: 6 000 rpm
Limiting speed: 3 600 rpm on grease, 4 500 rpm on oil
Mass: approximately 2.01 kg
Adapter sleeve: H316 (NSK complete adapter H316X), for a 70 mm shaft
Withdrawal sleeve: AH316, for a 75 mm seat
NSK quotes three different speed figures for this family and they are not interchangeable: the thermal rating is where heat generation balances heat dissipation under a reference condition, the mechanical rating is the structural ceiling for cage and rollers, and the limiting speeds are the practical ones you design to, depending on whether the bearing is greased or oiled. Comparing an NSK thermal figure against another maker’s limiting speed will mislead every time.
Sold as 1 Pc. One complete bearing: inner ring with both roller rows and cage, plus the outer ring. Spherical roller bearings are a non-separable assembly, so there is no cup or cone to buy alongside. This is the bare bearing only — no adapter sleeve, withdrawal sleeve, locknut, lockwasher or housing is included, and a sleeve is required to mount it.
Slide the sleeve onto the shaft, fit the bearing onto the sleeve taper, then draw it up with the locknut while measuring the reduction in radial internal clearance with a feeler gauge across the unloaded roller row. Work to the published clearance-reduction figure rather than a torque setting, because the taper converts small axial travel into large radial expansion and torque tells you very little. Bend one lockwasher tab into the nut slot when you are satisfied. Never drive through the rollers. Seat the outer ring squarely in its housing and let it take up its own alignment before final tightening — clamping the outer ring off-neutral throws away the self-aligning capability. Align the housing lubrication port with the outer-ring groove and purge before the first run. A plain shaft seat at h9 is generally adequate under an adapter sleeve.
Hoover Ball and Bearing’s bearing business combined with Nippon Seiko as Hoover-NSK Bearings and became NSK Corporation’s Ann Arbor plant, so the modern route to this part is through NSK: 22216EAKE4C3 is the closest current equivalent. Other dimensionally equivalent tapered-bore 22216 bearings include SKF 22216 EK, FAG 22216-E1-XL-K, NTN 22216EAKW33, NTN-SNR 22216EAKW33, Timken 22216KEJW33, RHP 22216EKJW33 and Link-Belt 22216LBK — specify C3 to match. All mount on the same H316 adapter sleeve, because H-series sleeve dimensions follow ISO 2982-1 and DIN 5415 rather than any single maker’s standard. The 22216 M and 22216 MB designations also carried on this listing are the same envelope with a machined brass cage — M is roller-guided, MB inner-ring-guided — so they are dimensionally interchangeable and useful search terms, but a different cage specification rather than an identical part. Read the lubrication codes as one feature under different letters: E4 on NSK, W33 on SKF, Timken, RHP and Link-Belt, S on FAG, D1 on NTN Japan, B33 on legacy SNR. The straight-bore 22216 is a related size, not an interchange: same envelope, but it mounts directly on an 80 mm shaft and this bearing will not.
