A machined brass cage tolerates higher temperature than steel or polymer and resists the shock and vibration that fatigue a pressed-steel cage in crushers and vibrating screens. It is forgiving in sliding contact against steel, so it holds up under marginal or contaminated lubrication. It is heavier, costs more, and runs a slightly lower limiting speed than a steel cage.
C3 clearance pairs with a tapered bore. Driving a bearing up an adapter sleeve consumes internal clearance as the inner ring expands, and a hot inner ring in a cooler housing consumes more in service. Too little residual clearance preloads the rollers and drives temperature up; too much narrows the load zone until rollers skid instead of rolling.
Locking Method: adapter sleeve with nut and lockwasher, or a machined tapered shaft seat. The tapered bore mounts on a matching machined taper, or on an adapter sleeve that provides the taper and clamps to a plain shaft. The drive-up distance along the taper sets the residual internal clearance, so running clearance is set during assembly rather than by shaft tolerance. The plain shaft under a sleeve is smaller than 90 mm; 90 mm is the bearing bore.
Drive-up on the adapter sleeve is measured, by the reduction in bore clearance with a feeler gauge or by axial drive-up distance, following Schaeffler’s mounting procedure. Mounting force passes through the ring being fitted, never through the rollers from one ring to the other.
