What this part is

A FAG 22209 double–row spherical roller bearing, 45 mm bore x 85 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide, straight cylindrical bore, with a glass–fibre reinforced polyamide cage and C3 clearance. Two rows of symmetrical barrel rollers run on one concave outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That gives heavy radial capacity, axial capacity in both directions, and tolerance of shaft deflection and housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.

Decoding the designation

222 — ISO dimension series for the wide, high–capacity double–row spherical roller family.
09 — bore size code, 45 mm bore.
E — reinforced high–capacity internal design.
S — lubricating groove and three lubricating holes in the outer ring. That is FAG’s code for the feature everyone else calls W33, which is why the carton designation is also written 22209–ES–TVPB–C3–W33.
TVPB — solid cage in glass–fibre reinforced polyamide, guided on the inner ring.
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than normal.

What these specs mean in practice

The polyamide cage is the spec that decides whether this bearing suits your position. It is light, quiet, forgiving of momentary lubrication starvation and it damps vibration better than pressed steel — but glass–fibre reinforced polyamide is rated for roughly 120 °C continuous. Above that you want the machined brass–cage variant (M, MA or MB) instead. If the position runs cool to warm, the polyamide cage is the better bearing; if it runs hot or sees hard shock, it is the wrong one.

C3 clearance exists for shafts that heat up or take a tight interference fit. The extra cold clearance is consumed by thermal growth of the inner ring, so the bearing lands on proper running clearance at temperature. Fit C3 where normal clearance was designed in and the shaft floats and the bearing gets noisy; fit normal clearance where C3 was specified and it can preload itself solid as it warms. Match what came out of the machine.

The S lubrication feature only earns its keep if the housing is plumbed for grease or oil. Groove plus three radial holes means lubricant arrives from the outside diameter, directly at the rollers, instead of having to migrate in from the ends.

Quantity and configuration

One bearing per order — 1 Pc. A complete non–separable bearing ships: outer ring, both roller rows, cage and inner ring. No adapter sleeve, lock nut or housing is included, and a cylindrical–bore bearing does not need one.

Fitting notes

Press only on the ring taking the interference fit, and never through the rollers or the cage — a polyamide cage will not survive being hammered. If you heat the inner ring to mount it, keep the bearing under about 120 °C; an induction heater set for a steel–cage bearing will cook this cage. The bearing self–aligns, so a little out–of–square in the housing bore is fine, but the outer ring still needs support across its full width or the roller ends will edge–load.

Interchange guidance

SKF 22209 E, FAG 22209–E1–XL, NSK 22209EAE4, NTN 22209EAD1, Nachi 22209EXW33, Koyo 22209RHRW33 and Timken 22209EJW33 all share this 45 x 85 x 23 seat. Match the clearance class (C3, not normal) and note the cage: the FAG M, MA and MB codes are the machined brass versions of the same bearing, dimensionally identical but rated for higher temperature. Those are related builds on the same envelope rather than exact equivalents, and the polyamide–cage part is the one to specify when quiet running and light weight matter more than heat.
