What this part is

A FAG 7217-B-TVP single-row angular contact ball bearing, 85 mm bore x 150 mm outside diameter x 28 mm wide — the 7217 light-series envelope. The outer ring is counterbored on one side so the full ball complement can be loaded, which is what gives the bearing its contact angle. It carries radial load plus heavy thrust in one direction, and the high shoulder must face the thrust.

Decoding the designation

72 – single-row angular contact ball bearing, light series.
17 – bore code, 17 x 5 = 85 mm bore.
B – FAG’s modified internal design, which on single-row 72xx bearings means a 40° contact angle. This is the code most often misread across brands: FAG B is 40°, while SKF AC and NSK A5 are 25° and SKF CD and NSK C are 15°.
TVP – solid window cage in glass-fibre reinforced polyamide, ball guided.
XL – Schaeffler’s X-life quality designation, which appears on current production of the same bearing as 7217-B-XL-TVP.

What these specs mean in practice

40° is the thrust end of the contact-angle range. The steep angle puts the ball load path much closer to axial, so thrust capacity and axial stiffness are the highest of the three common angles — which is exactly why 40° bearings are the default for pump shafts, vertical shafts, worm drives and any position where a large one-way thrust dominates. The trade is speed: at 40° centrifugal loading on the balls and heat generation rise faster with rpm, which is why the limiting speed here is 4,500 rpm and why grinding spindles use 15° instead.

The polyamide window cage is light and ball-guided, which keeps friction and noise down and gives good performance under shock. Its practical ceiling is temperature: glass-fibre reinforced polyamide is generally limited to around 120 °C continuous, so a machined brass cage (the MP or M suffix) is the alternative for hot service.

A 40° single-row bearing takes thrust one way only, so it is normally fitted in an opposed pair — two bearings back-to-back or face-to-face, or one 7217 against a second bearing at the far end of the shaft. Fitted alone it will not locate the shaft in the other direction.

Quantity and configuration

Sold as one bearing — inner ring, outer ring, ball complement and cage as one complete unit. This is a plain single with no universal-grinding or preload suffix, so it is not a matched set and two clamped together will not produce a defined preload. Where a drawing calls for a matched pair, that is the UA, UO or UL universal designation.

Fitting notes

Orient the counterbored (low shoulder) side away from the thrust load — fitted backwards the balls climb the raceway shoulder and the bearing fails quickly. Press or induction-heat onto the shaft against the inner ring only, and press into the housing against the outer ring only; never route mounting force through the balls, and never strike a polyamide cage. Give the bearing an opposing bearing to work against. Because it is open, it relies entirely on the housing for sealing.

Interchange guidance

Current Schaeffler production of this bearing is 7217-B-XL-TVP, with 7217-B-XL-TVP-UA and 7217-B-XL-TVP-UO as the universally matchable versions and 7217-B-TVP-P5 as the precision-class build. Direct 85 x 150 x 28 mm 40° equivalents from other makers: SKF 7217 BEP and 7217 BECBM, NSK 7217B and 7217BEAT85, NTN 7217B, Koyo 7217B, Nachi 7217B — the B suffix means 40° in all of these schemes, so they are like-for-like. Carried as dimensionally-correct cross-references with the difference named: SKF 7217 ACD/P4A and NSK 7217A5 are the same envelope at 25°, and SKF 7217 CD/P4A and NSK 7217C are 15° — same shaft and housing, but much less thrust capacity and more speed. The brass-cage version of this FAG bearing is 7217-B-MP, which suits higher temperature at the same ratings.
