An SKF K-48190 tapered roller bearing cone — the inner ring, tapered rollers and cage of a single-row inch-series tapered roller bearing. Bore is 4.2500 in (107.95 mm) and cone width is 1.3750 in (34.93 mm). Rings and rollers are case-carburised alloy steel, giving a hard running surface over a tough core.
SKF carries inch tapered roller components under the ANSI/ABMA numbers established by the original American makers, with a K- prefix marking the cone half. The base number 48190 is therefore the cone of the 48190/48120 pairing, and K48190 and 48190 are the same component written without the prefix or the hyphen.
A tapered roller bearing carries heavy radial load together with thrust in one direction, because the roller path is set on a cone angle and the rings are separable. Two rows mounted opposed take thrust both ways and allow the pair to be set to a chosen preload or endplay at assembly, which is why inch tapered rollers dominate wheel ends, gearbox shafts and pinion mountings.
1 Pc. Cone only. The matching cup is the 48120.
The cone is an interference fit on the shaft seat and the cup a fit in the housing bore, so mounting force goes through the ring being fitted alone. Endplay or preload across an opposed pair is set after both rings are seated, since the two halves of a tapered roller bearing have no built-in clearance of their own.
The 48190 cone number is common to the inch tapered roller programmes of SKF, Timken, Koyo, NTN and FAG, and those are genuine same-spec substitutions. The 48290 and 48390 cones are different bore sizes in the same number block rather than alternatives, and a cone furnished for two-row service carries an NA prefix.
