What this part is

A Fafnir 218W single-row deep groove ball bearing, 90 mm bore by 160 mm outside diameter by 30 mm wide, open on both faces with a pressed steel cage. Fafnir is Timken’s precision ball bearing line and the 200W block is its inch-era designation for the metric ISO 62 deep groove series. The ISO equivalent is the 6218 size.

Decoding the designation

The 218 size code gives a 90 mm bore in the ISO 62 dimension series, and the W suffix marks the open Fafnir deep groove ball bearing with no closure fitted. There is no clearance suffix in the designation, so the bearing carries normal internal clearance. There is no cage letter either, which in this family means the standard pressed steel ribbon cage.

What these specs mean in practice

A deep groove ball bearing of this size takes radial load with a useful amount of thrust in either direction, which is what makes it the default choice for general shafting, electric motors and gearbox positions. Open faces mean the bearing is lubricated and sealed by the housing rather than by itself, so it suits circulating oil or a grease-packed cavity and it can be flushed and relubricated in service. Fitting notes

Interchange guidance

An SKF 6218, FAG 6218, NSK 6218 or NTN 6218 in the open form with normal clearance and a pressed steel cage is the same specification. A 6218 2RS or 6218 ZZ is a different part, since the closure changes both the speed rating and the lubrication scheme. A 6218 in C3 clearance is likewise a different part.
