Product Description

What this part is

A Timken 5760/5722 single-row tapered roller bearing supplied as a matched set: the 5760 cone, which is the inner ring with its roller and cage assembly, together with the 5722 cup, which is the outer ring. Bore is 3.0000 in (76.2 mm) and the cup outside diameter is 5.5150 in. It is a heavy-duty imperial-series bearing for wheel ends, gearboxes, pinion positions, industrial drives and agricultural and construction machinery.

Decoding the designation

5760 — the cone: inner ring, tapered rollers and cage as one non-separable assembly5722 — the cup: the outer ring, with the matching raceway taperThe two numbers together denote a specific cone-and-cup pairing; a cone is only usable with a cup cut to the same taper

What these specs mean in practice

A tapered roller bearing carries radial and axial load at the same time because the raceways are cones: every roller contact resolves part of the radial load into a thrust reaction. That is why tapered rollers dominate wheel ends and pinion positions, where the load arrives at an angle.

The K factor of 1.44 is the ratio the design tables use to convert radial load into the induced thrust the bearing generates. A high K factor means a shallower cup angle and a bearing weighted toward radial capacity; a low K factor means a steeper angle and more thrust capacity. At 1.44 this bearing sits toward the radial-duty end of the range, which is the usual choice for a heavily loaded shaft with moderate thrust.

Because a single tapered roller takes thrust in one direction only, this bearing is normally mounted in an opposed pair, and the pair is set to a specified endplay or preload at assembly. The effective centre location of −0.46 in, measured inside the cone backface, is the point from which that span is calculated when the arrangement is laid out.

Cone and cup separate completely, which is a practical advantage: the cone is pressed or heated onto the shaft while the cup goes into its housing bore independently, and the two are brought together as the assembly closes up.

Quantity and configuration

One cone and one cup ship together, which is the complete single-row bearing. Spacers, shims, seals, lock nuts and housings are not included. A full opposed-pair shaft arrangement uses two of these bearings.

Fitting notes

The cone normally takes an interference fit on the shaft and the cup a tighter fit or a light press in the housing, depending on which ring rotates. Mounting force goes on the cone backface, never through the rollers. The shaft shoulder wants to fall between the 3.46 in frontface and 3.7 in backface backing diameters so the cone is supported without fouling the roller path, and the shaft fillet stays within 0.14 in so the bearing corner clears. Endplay or preload is set at assembly by shim, spacer or nut adjustment, measured with a dial indicator on the shaft end.

Interchange guidance

The 5760 cone mates only with a 5722 cup; other cups in the 57xx range are cut to different tapers and outside diameters. Equivalent complete sets exist under other makers’ numbers using the same Timken part numbering, since the imperial tapered roller series is a shared industry standard: SKF, NTN, Koyo, NSK and Bower all list 5760/5722 to the same dimensions. A precision-class 5760-3 cone is a different part — the −3 suffix denotes Timken Class 3 tolerances.
