Non-contact labyrinth seals that keep grease in
An isolator swaps a lip seal for a rotor and stator labyrinth, holding lubricant in while keeping washdown, dust, and vapor out, with no rubber face to cut a groove into the shaft. On hand are Impro Seal VBX units in inch sizes including 1-3/8 in ID by 2-3/8 in OD plus 3-3/4 in and 4-1/2 in bores with matching outer diameters. Sizing takes three numbers: shaft diameter, housing bore, and the axial space available in the seal cavity. Since the housing has to come apart anyway, most shops fit an isolator during a bearing change rather than as a separate job. Conventional lip seals are under seals and gaskets.
